INDIGENOUS INCLUSION

PayShepherd’s commitment to Indigenous inclusion and diversity

Medicine Wheel: A symbol of health and healing

The Medicine Wheel, or Sacred Hoop, is a powerful Indigenous symbol for many across North America. It represents the interconnectedness of life, balance, and the cycles of nature. It encompasses the four directions, the four elements, the four Aspects of life, and the four seasons. While interpretations vary, the Medicine Wheel is a powerful healing and guidance tool for balance and the cyclical nature of life.

Respecting Indigenous traditions and heritage

We honor the people and acknowledge the land on which PayShepherd is headquartered, Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations), and Region 3 of the Métis Nations of Alberta. We pay our respects to the traditional custodians of the land, their Elders, past, present, and emerging.

Embracing Indigenous ownership and diversity

PayShepherd proudly has a major Canadian Cree Indigenous shareholder, significantly influencing our inclusive workplace culture from our inception. PayShepherd is committed to inclusion and diversity across our footprint, including our job creation, supplier business opportunities, and our PayShepherd ecosystem. As such, our workforce consists of 48% BIPOC representation and 46% women.

Commitment to Truth & Reconciliation

In honor of Truth & Reconciliation, PayShepherd observes September 30 as a mandatory day of action. Employees commit to reflect on their personal calls to action and learning journeys. We recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, experiences, and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

PayShepherd policies promote equal opportunities and respect for indigenous knowledge and practices. Our awareness campaigns educate and build understanding about Indigenous cultures, histories, and issues, building our empathy with each other, our communities, and with our user base.

Enhancing contractor relationship management

PayShepherd’s platform is designed to manage contractor relationships effectively. Similar to the four pillars of health in the Medicine Wheel, our platform helps owners evaluate the overall health of their relationships throughout the contract life cycles.

PayShepherd’s platform monitors client contractor performance for Indigenous engagement across the following areas:

Highlighting Indigenous community spend
Promoting Indigenous procurement practices
Ensuring Indigenous participation in contracted labor

Fostering long-term inclusion and prosperity

Our shared history with indigenous communities is marked by both pain and resilience. By embracing concepts of healing and learning from one another, we aim to promote long-term inclusion, empowerment, and prosperity.

“PayShepherd addresses any challenge from the foundation, building alongside the people directly involved and indirectly impacted alike. It’s this approach that combines people with technology so that no one is left behind. We all benefit from a brighter future, to me, that’s the essence of reconciliation.”
